Christian Science Church in The Dalles

Our Church History

Built upon the rock of Christ, Truth

In the year 1892 Christian Science had its inception in The Dalles through a remarkable case of healing of one who, imbued with a desire to comprehend the spiritual meaning of the truth which had wrought such a wonderful change, at once began the study of Christian Science. Another healing soon followed. In 1897 regular services were held at a private home, but before long there was need for larger quarters.

In 1904 First Church of Christ, Scientist was organized with eleven charter members. In 1907 it once more became necessary to hold services at the home of one of the members, and the need for a Christian Science church home presented itself so strongly that at once a building fund was started. In the spring of 1909 a lot was given by one of the members, and immediately the contract was let for the erection of a church at a cost of $1,836.

This building was completed in the fall 1909.  On Oct. 31 the first service was held in the new edifice and on Jan. 3, 1915, it was dedicated.

FIRST CHURCH of CHRIST, SCIENTIST The Dalles, Oregon circa 1920

In 1921 the site for the present larger building was purchased. In 1927 the members received a substantial gift, after complying with the requirements accompanying the gift— the necessity for raising an equivalent amount with which to build the structure. This requirement was fulfilled in 1932, despite the period of depression. Now on a search for an accomplished architect to fulfill the unique vision of this church edifice, the membership voted to hire Archibald N. Torbitt (1883-1958), a Christian Scientist who had designed the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Anacortes in 1929.

The church was completed in the fall of 1932. For the next two years services were held in the Sunday school room. Later, available funds made possible the purchase of pews for the main auditorium.  Special dedicatory services were held on Sunday morning, January 1, 1939, at First Church of Christ, Scientist, The Dalles, Oregon.

The Mediterranean-style First Church of Christ, Scientist that Torbitt designed in 1930 for The Dalles, Oregon, continues to serve the function for which it was built.

    Meet Our Pastor

In 1895, the Founder of our church, Mary Baker Eddy, eliminated personal preaching and ordained the Holy Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as our universal and impersonal Pastor.

Mary Baker Eddy worked to present the inspired word of God and the words and works of Christ Jesus and the prophets together with the spiritual interpretation as explained in Science and Health.

Every week, students of Christian Science study the Weekly Bible Lessons containing citations from the Bible and Science and Health.

On Sunday mornings, the First and Second Reader in every Christian Science church, society and organization around the world read aloud that same weekly Bible Lesson from our Pastor — the two books. Studying the Bible Lesson during the week and then hearing the word of the Pastor from the Readers’ desk on Sundays opens a direct, rich and deeply healing connection with God for each individual member and attendee of our service.

You may study, borrow and purchase both the Bible and Science and Health in our Reading Room.

    Weekly Bible Lesson

The Christian Science Bible Lessons are the focus and foundation for our weekly study and application of Christian Science. The Bible Lesson's were introduced in the early days of the Christian Science Movement. Man’s origin and destiny have always been questions in everyone’s heart and so our Leader provided Lesson-Sermons to help quench this thirst and to answer specifically these queries which have so puzzled and disturbed mankind. Though the same subject occurs twice every year, each Lesson is individually inspired to guide the student to apply spiritual solutions to every human problem that has plagued mankind since the dawn of time.

Mrs. Eddy referred to the weekly Bible Lesson in the Church Manual as “a lesson on which the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends.” (Church Manual, Section Church By Laws, Moral Obligations, Article 3 Section) She established the daily study of the lesson to educate students in Christian Science without human interference or personal interpretation.

Mrs. Eddy appointed the Bible and Science and Health as the impersonal pastors, using the Lessons in place of a sermon at church services.

Until July of 1898, the Lessons were still based on the International Bible Series. Then Mrs. Eddy selected twenty-six subjects for them — each subject to be used twice a year. The Lessons then took on their present form.

The CS Bible Lesson from our Pastor, speaks to us directly and individually with a sermon that meets the human needs of the entire world. It’s easy to look to people and practitioners for help and advice, but we have our very powerful Pastor, available to anyone, any time, any place, that speaks directly to our spiritual identity, and cultivating a spiritual consciousness that communes directly with our heavenly Father.
